Fire and smoke damage restoration in the Twin Cities
D1 Construction Group restores homes after fire and smoke damage across the Twin Cities metro. We document the damage for your insurer, tear out burned and smoke-damaged materials, clean, seal or replace what the smoke reached, dry out the water used to fight the fire, and rebuild the rooms with the same crew.
What we do
Assessment and documentation
What burned, how far the smoke traveled, and what the water reached, photographed and written up for your adjuster.
Tear-out
Charred framing, drywall, insulation and flooring removed back to sound material.
Smoke and odor
Affected surfaces cleaned, sealed or replaced, depending on how far the smoke traveled.
Drying out the water
The water used to put the fire out gets the same treatment as any other water damage: dried to measured readings before anything is closed up.
Putting the rooms back
Framing, drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets and trim, by the crew that did the tear-out.
Where the smoke went
Why does smoke damage reach rooms the fire never touched?
Smoke moves on air currents: up stairwells, through ductwork and into wall cavities, so rooms well away from the fire can still need cleaning or tear-out. Soot left on surfaces can discolor them over time, and the smell settles into porous materials such as insulation, drywall and carpet. That is why porous materials close to a fire are usually replaced rather than cleaned.
| What it is | Usually |
|---|---|
| Painted walls with a light smoke film | Cleaned, sealed and repainted. |
| Drywall and insulation close to the fire | Replaced. |
| Smoke-stained framing that is still sound | Cleaned and sealed before the walls go back up. |
| Charred framing, carpet and pad | Replaced. |

Straight answers
What should I do after a house fire?
Stay out until the fire department says the house is safe to enter. Call your insurer to open the claim, photograph everything before anything is thrown out, and don’t run the furnace or air conditioning, which pulls soot through the ductwork. Don’t scrub soot off the walls yourself; it smears into the surface.
Can smoke-damaged walls be cleaned, or do they have to be replaced?
It depends on how far the smoke traveled and what the wall is made of. Painted drywall with a light film can often be cleaned, sealed and repainted. Drywall and insulation close to the fire, or anything that still smells after cleaning, gets replaced.
Will the smoke smell come back?
Not if it is dealt with at the source. The smell settles into porous materials like insulation, drywall, carpet and pad, so those come out, and smoke-stained framing is cleaned and sealed before the walls go back up.
Do you deal with the insurance company?
We document the damage and the scope in writing so you can give your adjuster something clear. The claim itself stays between you and your insurer.
Do you rebuild after the cleanup?
Yes. The crew that does the tear-out puts the rooms back — framing, drywall, paint, flooring, cabinets and trim — so nothing falls between a cleanup company and a separate contractor.
